Manufacturing Week in Mississippi is Sept. 29 – Oct. 3

Gov. Phil Bryant signed a proclamation Tuesday to declare September 29 – October 3, 2014 as Manufacturing Week in Mississippi. The proclamation comes in accordance with the National Association of Manufacturers’ Manufacturing Day in an effort to raise awareness about manufacturing and the available opportunities in this secure and growing sector of the economy.

“This proclamation recognizes the outstanding manufacturing companies we have in Mississippi. From Caterpillar to Viking to Ingalls shipyard, Mississippi companies manufacture state of the art, world class products that successfully compete in today’s global markets. They invest millions in our state and create thousands of well paying jobs with good benefits for their employees.”

The proclamation states the following:

WHEREAS, Mississippi manufacturers produce many world class products and use distinctive production processes to serve markets in the state of Mississippi and around the globe; and

WHEREAS, Manufacturing directly employs more than 136,700, or 12 percent of, Mississippi jobs in all 82 counties and helps to add more than 200,000 additional jobs in our local communities; and

WHEREAS, Mississippi ranks 9th in the nation in manufacturing employment; and

WHEREAS, Mississippi manufacturers pay more than $7.75 billion in wages and salaries annually; and

WHEREAS, Manufacturing contributes more than $16 billion, or 15 percent, to the gross state product of Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, Mississippi manufacturers exported nearly $12 billion worth of manufactured products to the world in 2013, including the state’s top export markets of Panama, Canada, and Mexico; and

WHEREAS, 55 Fortune 500 companies have 83 manufacturing plants in Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, 90 international companies from 22 nations are engaged in manufacturing at 108 Mississippi plants; and

WHEREAS, Manufacturing is the engine that powers Mississippi’s economy:

NOW, THEREFORE, I Phil Bryant, Governor of the State of Mississippi, hereby proclaim September 29 – October 3, 2014, as


and acknowledge the positive impact the manufacturing industry has on our economy and our citizens, and that our economy will continue to grow through the maintenance of a strong manufacturing base in the state.
