VT Halter Marine Awarded Contracts

VT Halter Marine Inc., a subsidiary of Vision Technologies Systems Inc., is a marine manufacturer located in Moss Point, Mississippi, and employs 440 people. The Mississippi Gulf Coast facility was damaged by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005.

The Challenge

VT Halter Marine had a goal of seeking new contracts which required employees with highly skilled training. The company would not be able to pursue new contracts and would most likely have a reduction in employment if the quality of their product declined due to not having employees with proper training to manufacture competitive products. VT Halter Marine contacted the Mississippi Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP.ms), a NIST MEP network affiliate, for assistance.

MEP Center's Role

The MEP.ms Center at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC), established training resources for VT Halter Marine. The collaborative effort consisted of two MEP.ms/MGCCC employees working nearly full-time on site at VT Halter Marine and two training instructors located on the Jackson County Campus of MGCCC. The in-plant instructors are responsible for upgrade training for existing employees of VT Halter Marine on new manufacturing skills and processes, including welding, which resulted in winning new contracts worth more than $25 million.

  • Awarded more than $25 million in contracts.
“The capabilities and support from the MEP.ms Center at MGCCC is second to none. I have been in this industry a long time and have dealt with many training and engineering organizations over the years and you have the best system and people I have ever done business with. We couldn’t have won these important contracts without you.”
