JACKSON - State Supreme Court Justice James Maxwell (District 3, Place 3) and Supreme Court Justice Bobby Chamberlin (District 3, Place 1) were both nominated to serve on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi.
WHAT THIS MEANS: Both justices were elected to eight-year terms in 2024. When a seat opens in the middle of a justice’s term, the governor appoints a candidate to fill the vacancy. If more than half of the term remains, the appointed justice holds office until Mississippi’s next general election, more than nine months after the vacancy occurred. The elected justice serves the remainder of the unexpired term.
